about

10/2021

Boasting an enviable line-up of Sydney musicians who have played key roles in the independent Australian music scene over the last three decades, The Aerial Maps have the ability to make you cry, laugh, reminisce and sway. Their music explores the darker reaches of the country's psyche, the desperate lives lived beneath the hot sun and on the edges of the wide open roads through narrative and song.

Adam Gibson (Modern Giant, The Ark-Ark Birds), Simon Gibson (Disneyfist, Sneeze, Modern Giant), Peter Fenton (Crow), Alannah Russack (The Hummingbirds), Mark 'Na Na' Hyland (Disneyfist, Handsome Young Strangers, and many more!) and drummer Jasper Fenton (Decoder Ring, The Laurels) comprise the current core nucleus of the band. Led by Adam, whose two decade “best-of” album The Songs of Adam Gibson, debuted at number one on the Australian Independent Records chart in 2020, The Aerial Maps are influenced by the bright landscapes and long distances of Australia, of the like described by bands such as the Triffids, Not Drowning Waving, the Go-Betweens and Midnight Oil.

When founding member Simon Holmes sadly passed away in 2017, it spurred Adam to reconvene his musical cohort again, bringing together the current lineup of The Aerial Maps and, after a five-year hiatus, beginning a new era of the band. With a renewed sense of purpose the group played extensive shows, with bands such as Halfway, and embarked on the recording of a new album. The result of which is now here in the form of their third album, Intimate Hinterland.

A widescreen experience that takes the listener on a journey through the Australian landscape, with all the associated hope and heartbreak, Intimate Hinterland is a collection of seven brand-new songs.

Heralding their first album release in almost 10 years, it is a joyful return for a band who have a sense of timelessness in their sound, where a decade is just a blip and the distance between, say, Far North Queensland or the back of Broken Hill can be covered in the blink of an eye, (or the verse of a song). A travelogue-in-song and thus an antidote to lockdown, Intimate Hinterland returns the Maps’ to their place as what The Courier Mail once called “one of Australia’s most special bands."
